  4. A North Carolina day-care operator draws 12 life terms for sex
  5. abuse

  8.     The children spoke solemnly of sodomy, animal sacrifice, fire
  9. and snakes. One boy claimed that Robert Kelly Jr., who operated
  10. the Little Rascals day-care center in Edenton, N.C., prayed to
  11. the devil. A girl said Kelly, the balding former golf pro they
  12. called Mr. Bob, raped and drugged her, then photographed her
  13. performing sexual acts with another child. Another boy said Mr.
  14. Bob took the children on a boat trip and pushed him overboard to
  15. the sharks.

  17.     Though some of the children's tales verged on the
  18. fantastic, their testimony proved strong enough to convict
  19. Kelly, 44, on 99 counts of sexually abusing a dozen children at
  20. his preschool in this remote town perched on the edge of
  21. Albemarle Sound.The verdict brought to an end the longest (eight
  22. months) and most expensive (estimated cost: $1.2 million) trial
  23. in North Carolina history. Often compared with California's
  24. landmark McMartin Pre-School case, whose defendants were
  25. ultimately acquitted, the trial aroused heated passions in the
  26. bucolic community of Edenton, where many residents were torn
  27. between outrage over the alleged crimes and fears that they had
  28. unleashed a witch hunt.

  30.     Judge D. Marsh McLelland sentenced Kelly to serve 12
  31. consecutive life terms, one for each victim, ages four to seven.
  32. "I am innocent," said Kelly, who plans to appeal the
  33. convictions. "I have not done these things." As he left the
  34. courthouse in nearby Farmville after his sentencing, several
  35. children, some of whom came to court clutching teddy bears and
  36. dolls, yelled "I hate you." Spat one young girl: "See you in a
  37. million years."
